Bear in the Window
He’s restless at home
He’s so nimble and young
He’s finding new ways to get by
A lego and Zoom and school in his room
He asks his mom not to cry
There’s a bear in the window to show him there’s hope inside
There’s a stare in the window of a house where we all have cried
There’s a smile on a screen and a wish to be seen
About how we’ll endure the ride
There’s a bear in the window to show him there’s hope inside
She’s lost in a book
She’s in her favorite nook
She’s curled up like a kitten
A rerun and cards and a walk through the yard
She wonders what might be hidden
Behind the bear in the window that shows her there’s hope inside
That stare in the window of the place where her friends have cried
There’s a look on her face that just seems out of place
As she quietly moves with the tide
But the bear in the window reminds her there’s hope inside
We’re doing our best
To remember the rest
Who simply aren’t doing as well
Between smiling and crying we’re somehow relying
On some very small sign to tell
That a bear in the window can show us there’s hope inside
And a stare in the window keeps us safe as we all have tried
In the space we have now we’ll grow closer somehow
And smile each time we spy
That bear in the window and faith that there’s hope inside
"Bear Spotting" was a movement to keep kids active and smiling during the pandemic of 2020. Americans put teddy bears in the windows of their homes so children could walk the neighborhood and spot them. This poem is dedicated to everyone who participated in the movement ... and to my children, Jacques and Sophie, who were doing their best to stay cheerful during those challenging times.
